Ikusasa LeAfrika Foundation (ILAF), a non-profit organization which is the brainchild of Dr Zweli Mkhize, celebrated the Mandela Day at Inchanga at the Obed Mlaba Technical School. Dr Zweli Mkhize addressed the ceremony which was attended by over 200 people.
The school was started by the community motivated by the concern that children had to travel 11 kilometres each way to the nearest Inchanga Primary School. The Technical High School was started as a response to the challenge that after primary education, the children of the area had to travel close to 30 kilometres to the nearest secondary school. The school currently operates out of 4 prefab classrooms.
Activities on the day included:
- Handing over the staff room, kitchen and toilets already built by the Rotary Club of Kloof at the school.
- Handing over the Science kits and duplicating machine already purchased and delivered by ILAF to the school.
- Conducting a sod-turning ceremony to commence the construction of the four classrooms that includes a science laboratory.
- Placing non-removable benches for the learners to sit during the break interval and renovations in the neighbouring house that has accommodated them over time during the day and used as the kitchen for the school leaners.
During his address, Dr Mkhize said “we are grateful to teachers who produce excellent results under these conditions”.
